Two Gendarmerie special vehicles were vandalized on Tuesday during the protest in Victory Square, while 29 violent demonstrators were detained and taken to police stations, Alex Iacob, spokesperson for the Bucharest Gendarmerie, announced.

According to him, protesters threw stones, broken curbs, clubs and other objects found in the area at law enforcement officers. Images captured by journalists also show a group attempting, unsuccessfully, to overturn a Gendarmerie vehicle.

Law enforcement officers used tear gas to isolate the violent groups and remove people who were not cooperating. The 29 protesters were taken to police stations for the application of administrative sanctions and the preparation of criminal case files.

During the incidents, 24 people required medical attention. The Gendarmerie representative said that the property of people who had no connection to the protest was also vandalized. He added that the demonstration was illegal and had neither an organizer nor an informal leader with whom law enforcement officers could communicate. The Gendarmerie called on peaceful participants to distance themselves from the violent groups.
