The Bucharest Gendarmerie detained 26 people following violent incidents at Tuesday’s protest in Victory Square. They were removed from among the participants and taken to several police stations in Bucharest to establish the facts and determine the legal measures to be taken.

According to the Gendarmerie, the detained individuals behaved violently during the demonstration. Law enforcement intervened after some participants allegedly forced through security barriers, threw objects or caused damage.

Following the incidents, 24 people required medical care. They included eight gendarmes injured while maintaining public order. Four people were transported to hospital for further treatment, including one gendarme.

The Bucharest Gendarmerie says it respected the right to peaceful protest and that the intervention targeted exclusively behavior that endangered people’s safety, property or public order. The institution urged participants to follow the instructions of law enforcement and distance themselves from any form of violence, warning that such actions would not be tolerated.
