Prosecutors detained seven more demonstrators accused of attacking law enforcement officers at the September 15 protest

On Tuesday, the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Bucharest Tribunal ordered the detention of seven more protesters accused of involvement in the violence that occurred during the September 15 demonstration in Bucharest’s Victory Square. The measure was taken after 29 searches were carried out in 16 counties, resulting in 30 people being brought in for questioning.

Investigators are handling a criminal case involving 40 people, on charges including public incitement, assaulting a public official, disturbing public order and peace, destruction, and assault or other acts of violence.

According to the Bucharest Police, during the demonstration, violent participants allegedly threw curbstones, bottles, metal barriers, and pyrotechnic devices at gendarmes. Some protesters allegedly struck several gendarmes with their fists, feet, and wooden objects, including clubs. In addition, two employees of a media group were allegedly physically assaulted.

The new detentions add to the measures ordered by the courts last week: five people were placed in pretrial detention, while another five were placed under house arrest. Investigations are continuing to establish all responsibility for the violence.
