Prosecutors seek the pretrial detention of 14 more people following the violence at the farmers’ protest

On Wednesday, prosecutors from the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Bucharest Tribunal are seeking 30 days of preventive detention for another 14 people under investigation for violence committed during the September 15, 2026 protest. Investigators claim that the defendants attacked gendarmes, assaulted two employees of a media group and damaged a vehicle belonging to the Romanian Gendarmerie.

A total of 27 people were detained following searches carried out in Bucharest and 15 counties on September 22 and 23. Ten of the defendants have already been placed in preventive detention for 30 days, after the judge for rights and freedoms approved the prosecutors’ requests on September 22.

For another 14 people, prosecutors referred the case to the court on September 23 and are requesting the same preventive measure. Those targeted are being investigated for assaulting law enforcement officers, assault or other acts of violence, destruction, and disturbing public order and peace.

Another three people were placed under judicial supervision for 60 days. The obligations imposed include a ban on participating in public gatherings.

The searches targeted 30 people, but only 27 were found. The investigation is being conducted by prosecutors together with police officers from the Bucharest General Directorate of Police.
