AUR criticizes the gendarmes’ intervention at the farmers’ protest and calls for direct dialogue between Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and the demonstrators

AUR criticized the Gendarmerie’s response to the farmers’ protest held on Tuesday in Victory Square and compared the use of tear gas with the authorities’ intervention on August 10, 2018. The party maintains that the demonstration was peaceful and calls on the Government to engage in direct dialogue with the protesters.

The party led by George Simion says that people who forced their way through the cordons or resorted to violence must be identified and individually sanctioned, but argues that the intervention should not have affected the entire crowd. AUR is asking the Gendarmerie to explain who ordered the use of gas, under what conditions, and why those involved in the incidents were not strictly isolated.

According to the statement, the effects of the gas were reportedly felt including in Victoria Passage and in the underground access areas. AUR says the images have brought the August 10, 2018, protest back into focus and accuses the authorities of failing to learn the lessons of that episode.

The party says there is also political responsibility. AUR claims that Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan was aware of the livestock breeders’ situation but did not take part in the negotiations at the July 30 protest, delegating Tánczos Barna instead. The party is calling on the prime minister to leave Victoria Palace and speak directly with the farmers.

AUR condemns violence but maintains that the tensions are the result of the unresolved problems faced by livestock breeders and shepherds, who have been complaining for months about the lack of solutions.
