The Scottish Parliament voted on Tuesday evening to reject the bill on assisted suicide, with 69 votes against 57, a margin larger than expected. This decision came after four days of intense debates, during which aspects related to the protection of people with disabilities against coercion were discussed.
In May 2022, the bill had been advanced with 70 votes in favor and 56 against. In contrast, a similar bill for England and Wales, adopted by the House of Commons, faces opposition in the House of Lords, where over a thousand amendments have been submitted.
This rejection means that no part of the United Kingdom will have the right to assisted suicide in the near future, despite the popularity of this measure among voters and trends in other developed nations, such as the USA and Australia.
