The National Assembly of France voted for the creation of a right to assisted dying under strict conditions, after years of debates and legislative changes. The bill, which was rejected three times by the Senate, allows assisted dying for French adults suffering from serious and incurable illnesses that endanger their lives.
Patients must freely express their intention to request this right, and the doctor will make a decision within 15 days. After a two-day reflection period, the patient will have to self-administer the lethal substance, with the option for a doctor to intervene if necessary. France thus joins other European countries that have adopted similar laws.
The subject has generated controversy, attracting opposition from the Catholic Church and some members of the medical profession, but the majority of the population supports the option of assisted dying. President Emmanuel Macron has been a constant supporter of this bill, which is now set to be examined by the Constitutional Council.
