The lower house of the French parliament, the National Assembly, voted on Wednesday in favor of the "right to assistance to die" law, which regulates euthanasia and assisted suicide for patients with serious irreversible conditions.
The bill was adopted with 291 votes in favor and 241 against, being the final vote at the third reading, which means that the law is now definitively adopted.
The introduction of this law has been a major objective of President Emmanuel Macron during his current term.
The law will be subject to review by the Constitutional Council, at the initiative of Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu, who has expressed reservations regarding certain aspects, including the two-day reflection period for patients.
The right to assisted suicide will be limited to adult patients with incurable conditions who can express their wishes in a conscious manner.
A doctor will verify the eligibility of patients, and they can withdraw from the procedure at any time.
