The British government announces a bill to ban conversion therapies targeting LGBT+ individuals.

The British government has emphasized the seriousness of conversion practices, which claim to be able to change individuals' sexual orientation or gender identity, highlighting the abuses suffered by victims, including beatings and manipulation. The Secretary of State for Equality, Olivia Bailey, stated that legal gaps have left LGBT+ individuals vulnerable and announced the need for legislation.

Although a bill has been proposed since 2018, it has not progressed due to political changes. The Labour Party, in power since 2024, has committed to adopting measures that will also include trans individuals.

The bill will define the crime and will penalize the facilitation of these practices in England and Wales, leaving the decision for Scotland and Northern Ireland. LGBT+ rights organizations have welcomed the initiative, considering it an essential step.

The European Union has also stated that it cannot impose a ban at the continental level but recommends that member states take action. Currently, conversion therapies are banned in eight EU member states.
