The United Kingdom threatened Eritrea with a total visa ban for its citizens, accusing the authorities in Asmara of refusing to cooperate in the repatriation of undocumented migrants and people convicted of crimes. The measures were announced on Thursday, after months of confidential negotiations deemed fruitless by London.

The British Home Office suspended expedited visa processing for Eritrean government officials and representatives. In addition, Eritrean diplomats need authorization to travel more than 60 kilometers from London. The United Kingdom is calling on Eritrea to resume issuing consular laissez-passer permits, which are necessary for returning citizens without valid passports.

Eritreans represented the largest category of migrants who arrived in the United Kingdom in improvised boats via the English Channel between July 2025 and June 2026: 5,875 people, according to the Home Office. More than 80% of Eritrean asylum seekers receive a favorable decision.

The Eritrean Embassy denounced “unacceptable practices” and rejected forced repatriations, accusing London of attracting migrants through its asylum policy. The United Kingdom has already used similar measures against Angola, Namibia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Eritrea, independent since 1993, is led by President Issaias Afeworki and imposes indefinite military service.

Context: London has intensified diplomatic pressure and measures against irregular migration

Before the decision regarding Eritrea, the United Kingdom had already announced measures aimed at reducing irregular migration, amid crossings in makeshift vessels through the English Channel. In earlier reports, the traffic was described as being accompanied by an increase in the number of people crammed into boats, while authorities flagged the safety risks.

At the same time, London also used diplomatic pressure tools in its relations with other states, including through threats and reciprocal measures related to consular and diplomatic missions. In this context, tensions between the United Kingdom and Israel were reported, with possible expulsions and reactions to decisions concerning consulates and representatives’ access.

In parallel, discussions about controls and reprisals also emerged in a European context, after Spain warned Italy of countermeasures if it did not suspend the border controls imposed following the crisis in Ceuta. These episodes shaped a climate in which administrative and diplomatic measures can escalate rapidly.
