A group of experts from the European Union has recommended restricting access to social networks for children under 13 years old, suggesting that their use should only be allowed under the supervision of parents or in educational settings.
The report was requested by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and was presented on Monday in Brussels. Several EU countries, such as Spain, Greece, Germany, and Austria, plan to introduce legal bans for minors up to a certain age. Implementing these age limits on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat will require actions at the EU level, as the European Commission is responsible for enforcing rules on online platforms. Von der Leyen expressed concerns about the impact of social networks on children, citing Australia as a model, where a ban was introduced for children under 16 years old. The EU Executive is expected to present legislative proposals by the end of the year.
