The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will present on September 16, in her State of the European Union speech, proposals to ban children's access to social networks. This initiative marks a significant political commitment from Brussels to introduce age restrictions across the European Union, following pressures from countries such as France, Spain, Germany, Denmark, and Greece. Although a minimum age for using social networks has not yet been established, a EU official mentioned that a team of experts will present recommendations on July 13. Online protection of children is a priority of the current mandate of the European Commission, and Ireland, which holds the presidency of the EU Council, supports a European approach to user age verification. Other countries, such as Australia and the United Kingdom, have already implemented similar measures. Critics in the European Parliament, such as Christel Schaldemose, are calling for faster action from the Commission, emphasizing that some member states are already taking independent measures for children's online safety.
