Brussels has issued a warning to Meta, highlighting that the infinite scrolling features on Instagram and Facebook could violate new European rules regarding online content.
This reaction comes amid increased scrutiny of the impact of social media on children, in the context of Meta being found liable in a lawsuit in the United States, which highlighted how its platforms contribute to children's addiction. More and more countries are adopting measures to restrict access to social media for individuals under 16 years old.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will present the conclusions of a group of experts on online child safety, while Brussels is calling for design changes for Instagram and Facebook, including disabling autoplay and infinite scrolling, as well as introducing effective breaks to limit time spent on the platforms.
