NATO will strengthen the defense of its eastern flank through a new structure designed to facilitate the rapid deployment of forces in Latvia and Estonia, in the event of a war with Russia, according to sources cited by Reuters.
Currently, the forces in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and northern Poland are coordinated by a single multinational headquarters in Szczecin, Poland.
The new structure will allow for the rapid mobilization of massive forces, estimated to number between 40,000 and 60,000 soldiers.
Germany and the Netherlands have agreed, in coordination with NATO, to allocate the German-Dutch Corps for the defense of Latvia and Estonia. Details about when this decision will become operational and the number of troops involved remain unclear. These measures come amid NATO warnings about possible Russian attacks on member states, accusations that Russia denies, claiming that NATO contributes to tensions by expanding close to its borders.
