Denmark will deploy a battalion of up to 850 soldiers in Latvia this autumn, thus contributing to the strengthening of NATO's eastern flank. The Danish contingent will replace the Swedish troops currently in the country and will participate in defense and deterrence missions in the Baltic region, in the context of security tensions generated by the war in Ukraine.
The Danish Minister of Defense, Jeppe Bruus, emphasized the importance of this mission, stating that Denmark's security depends on the stability of the Baltic region. Starting in 2024, Denmark will annually deploy a battalion consisting of 700 to 1,200 soldiers in the Baltic countries, for a period of four to six months.
The Danish battalion will integrate into the multinational brigade led by Canada and will be able to participate in exercises in the other Baltic countries. Additionally, Denmark will send a maritime mine clearance unit to protect critical infrastructure in crisis situations.
