Denmark has decided to extend the duration of mandatory military service from four to 11 months, in response to concerns about European security generated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Approximately 1,600 young Danes, including Princess Isabella (photo, during enrollment), began military training on Monday at the Royal Life Guards Hussar Regiment in Antvorskov Barracks, Slagelse.

Colonel Michael Villumsen emphasized that this reform is part of NATO's efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities, and Denmark is contributing by increasing the number of trained soldiers.

In Denmark, enrollment is mainly voluntary, but in the case of an insufficient number of recruits, selection is done by lottery.

Approximately 20% of new recruits are women, and mandatory military service has also been extended to women over the age of 18. The program includes basic military training, followed by operational missions such as surveillance activities and the use of drones.
