Denmark and Greenland welcomed the agreement reached with the United States on expanding the American military presence on the Arctic island. The agreement, announced by President Donald Trump, aims to strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic and limit Russia’s and China’s access to strategic bases or investments in Greenland.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the agreement strengthens common security and is beneficial for NATO and Europe. She emphasized that the agreement recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.

In Nuuk, Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens Frederik Nielsen, described the pact as a compromise. He stated that the agreement also guarantees and consolidates the security of Greenland, Denmark, the United States, and the Western alliance, while recognizing the island’s interests and its role in international cooperation.

According to Donald Trump, no adversary of the United States will be able to establish a base, maintain a military presence, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without Washington’s written approval. The State Department specified that the reference concerns Russia and China.

The United States already operates Pituffik Space Base, formerly Thule Air Base, which is used for early warning of missiles, space operations, and surveillance of the Arctic.
