The US, Denmark and Greenland sign an agreement at the UN on security in the Arctic and North Atlantic

The United States, Denmark and Greenland are set to sign an agreement at the United Nations headquarters in New York on strengthening security in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions. The ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 local time, or 14:30 GMT.

The document will be signed by Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and US President Donald Trump. The agreement has not yet been made public, but authorities in Copenhagen say it recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.

According to Washington, the deal will prevent Russia and China from building military bases or making significant investments in Greenland without the approval of the authorities in Nuuk. At the same time, the agreement establishes a framework for strengthening the US military presence in the territory.

The agreement follows the diplomatic crisis triggered by Donald Trump, who threatened that the United States could annex Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory with a strategic position and significant resources. Mette Frederiksen said the agreement is beneficial for the Nordic countries, NATO and Europe’s security.
