NATO welcomed, on Saturday, the agreement announced by the United States with Denmark and Greenland regarding the security of the Arctic territory. The North Atlantic Alliance stated that the agreement will contribute to increasing security, stability, and cooperation in a region considered vital.

A NATO spokesperson said that the agreement is due to be signed next week, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The Alliance specified that it will continue to assume responsibility for strengthening security in the Arctic.

US President Donald Trump announced late Friday night that he had secured “permanent control” of Greenland’s security by the United States, with the agreement of Denmark and Greenland. According to the State Department, the document will prevent Russia, China, or any other adversary of Washington from establishing military bases, sending troops, or making sensitive investments in the territory without US approval.

Washington also announced that it would immediately begin the process of developing a significant American military presence in Greenland.
