The USA and Denmark are preparing an agreement on opening two military bases in Greenland

The United States intends to reopen the former Bluie West One military base in Narsarsuaq and establish a new base at Mestersvig, in eastern Greenland, according to sources cited by Reuters. The agreement is due to be signed on Tuesday in New York by the US, Denmark and the Greenlandic government, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, to strengthen security in the Arctic.

The document’s text has not been made public, and the details have not yet been finalized. The White House said the agreement would “ensure and defend the security of Greenland and the United States,” while Denmark maintains that regional security should be managed within NATO, rather than exclusively by Washington and Copenhagen.

Narsarsuaq was home to the US Bluie West One base, which was closed in the 1950s. Mestersvig is currently used by Denmark’s Sirius Patrol, a special forces unit that operates with dog sleds.

The plan comes after months of pressure from President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly argued that the United States should control Greenland. During the Cold War, the US had 17 military installations and more than 10,000 troops on the island. Today, the Pituffik Space Base remains, with approximately 150 US service members.
