NATO is strengthening its military presence on the eastern flank in response to recent security incidents, including the downing of Russian drones in Romania and the crash of debris from a ballistic missile in Poland. The alliance will send a Spanish contingent to Romania, consisting of seven F-18 aircraft and approximately 200 soldiers, as well as a tanker aircraft A400M.
Turkey and Italy will enhance their presence in the Baltic states, with F-16 and Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. This deployment marks a shift in strategy, moving from air policing missions to an integrated extended air defense system capable of responding to varied threats, including drones and missiles. The commander of the Spanish detachment emphasized the commitment to collective security and the need for a constant presence. These measures come in response to the increasing threats in the region, which include the frequent use of drones and missiles near NATO's borders.
