Before NATO’s internal discussions, the Alliance announced that it would adjust its defense posture in the Black Sea after two commercial vessels were hit by drones, 27–29 kilometers off the coast of Bulgaria; one sank, and at least 11 sailors were reported missing. Secretary General Mark Rutte said that NATO would adapt its measures “as necessary,” after having mentioned that the Alliance had already strengthened its position on the eastern flank.
Meanwhile, Bulgaria requested NATO support to strengthen defense against drones and attacks on commercial vessels, including fighter jets, patrol aircraft, missile defense systems, and counter-drone equipment; at the same time, Sofia had announced that it expected to join, by October 30, a NATO initiative dedicated to defense against drones.
