Denmark has officially launched the 11-month mandatory military service, with 1,600 volunteer recruits distributed in military centers.

Denmark implemented its new mandatory military service on Monday, extended to 11 months, according to a legal reform approved in 2024. Approximately 1,600 recruits, all volunteers, have been assigned to various military centers, according to a statement from the Danish army. This extension is justified by the need to respond to new threats and security challenges.

The recruits will benefit from five months of basic training, followed by integration into operational service, with the possibility of being deployed on NATO missions or in Greenland. The Danish government has also proposed extending mandatory military service to women, similar to other Nordic countries, in the context of security changes brought about by the war in Ukraine. The medium-term goal is to increase the annual number of recruits from 4,500 to 6,500, with a significant proportion of women among them.
