European Commissioner for Defense: Europe must mobilize 100,000 soldiers to deter Russia

Andrius Kubilius, the European Commissioner for Defense, stated that Europe must be able to rapidly deploy approximately 100,000 soldiers to deter a potential Russian attack.

The European Union is mobilizing billions of euros to support member states in the face of external threats, but is facing significant challenges in recruiting and retaining military personnel. Emmanuel Jacob, the president of EUROMIL, emphasized that it is essential to have enough personnel to manage investments in defense. A survey showed that recruitment is problematic, and personnel leave the military after about 10 years due to low salaries and poor working conditions.

The 2024 European Parliament report highlighted these issues and called for solutions. Recruitment challenges also affect NATO, where a report on these difficulties is expected.

Expert Chris Kremidas-Courtney emphasized that the future of European security depends on the ability of societies to rebuild the social contract around national defense.
