The Pentagon is considering the withdrawal of approximately 25,000 U.S. troops stationed in Europe, while one scenario envisions reducing troop levels by up to 40,000 personnel, NBC News reported Thursday. No final decision has yet been made.

General Alexus Grynkewich, commander of U.S. European Command and Allied forces in Europe, is expected to present an initial classified assessment to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Friday. A final recommendation could be submitted by November 6.

The plans under consideration include the withdrawal of aircraft, ships, and military equipment. Germany, Italy, and Spain would be among the countries most affected. At the same time, some U.S. troops and capabilities could be relocated to NATO countries in Eastern Europe, closer to Russia.

Currently, approximately 80,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Europe, including around 10,000 in Poland. The analysis began in June, amid pressure from the Trump administration for European allies to assume greater responsibility for their own defense.

The possible withdrawal has caused concern in Congress. A 2026 defense policy bill limits troop reductions in Europe to below a threshold of 76,000 personnel, except when certain security and legislative consultation conditions are met.
