Sam Altman proposes slowing AI development and coordinating major companies to limit the risks of the technology

OpenAI is considering slowing the pace of artificial intelligence development, while CEO Sam Altman told employees that major companies in the field could work together to limit the technology’s risks, according to Bloomberg, cited by EFE and Agerpres.

The statement was made during a meeting held this week, amid a growing number of warnings from researchers and figures in the technology industry. OpenAI’s chief scientific officer, Jakub Pachocki, recently argued that companies in the sector should coordinate and voluntarily slow the development of advanced systems when circumstances require it.

OpenAI says it has already suspended certain internal training programs and slowed some development processes for security reasons. In July, Sam Altman also spoke with White House representatives about the need to moderate the pace of artificial intelligence development.

Similar warnings have recently come from researchers who left Anthropic and Google DeepMind. They called for greater transparency regarding AI risks. Bill Gates, for his part, called for clearer rules, warning that current models could amplify the risks of cyberattacks, bioterrorism and psychosocial effects.
