In its annual report, the Dutch Ministry of Defense emphasizes that Europe is in a 'gray zone' between war and peace, committing to improve investments in defense, especially in drone technology. Dutch intelligence services estimate that Russia is preparing for a long-term confrontation with Europe, and in the most pessimistic scenario, a limited conflict with NATO members could occur within a year of the end of the war in Ukraine.
The warning coincides with preparations for the NATO summit on July 7-8, where the Russian threat will be a central topic. Former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte stated that Russia could be ready to use military force against NATO in the next five years.
The Netherlands aims for half of its operational capabilities to be 'unmanned' within this timeframe, and to achieve this goal, the government will establish a dedicated drone development laboratory. Defense Minister Dilan Yesilgoz emphasized the urgency of this responsibility to protect the freedom and security of Europe.
