Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, was sentenced in September 2023 to 27 years in prison for his involvement in an attempted coup after losing the 2022 elections. Although he began serving his sentence in November, a bill currently under debate could reduce its duration to just two years. According to estimates from the Brasília Court of Criminal Enforcement, under current legislation, Bolsonaro would serve eight years in prison, after which he could benefit from a more lenient form of serving, such as judicial supervision.
The legislative initiative was adopted by the Chamber of Deputies, but the Senate, with a more balanced composition, could make changes, considering that many senators believe the law could encourage crime. The bill would also benefit Bolsonaro's supporters convicted for the riots in January 2023 in Brasília.
