The Spanish Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, announced that Madrid will officially ask the European Union to lift the sanctions imposed on Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, after the National Assembly of Venezuela adopted an amnesty law. Albares described this law as a positive step, mentioning that sanctions are not an end in themselves, but a tool to promote democratic dialogue in Venezuela. He emphasized that, although former president Nicolas Maduro has not been sanctioned by the EU, Rodriguez has been included on the list of sanctioned officials since 2018, banning her from entering the EU due to her role in the controversial elections that consolidated Maduro's power. Albares stated that the EU should respond positively to the recent progress in Venezuela.
