Police carried out ten searches on Tuesday in Brașov and Sibiu counties as part of a criminal case concerning possible abuse of office and the unlawful direct award of construction works worth approximately 930,000 lei.
The investigation concerns the construction of a mortuary chapel for a public institution. Starting in 2024, the institution allegedly initiated a procedure for the direct award of the works. Police are checking compliance with regulations on local public finances, as well as urban-planning rules.
Nine searches took place in Brașov County, including at the headquarters of the public institution and at a property under its administration. The homes of former and current public officials were targeted, along with the offices of architecture, civil construction and site supervision firms that had contractual relations with the institution. The tenth search was carried out in Sibiu County.
Investigators also enforced an order to seize documents from the headquarters of a religious institution in Brașov. They are looking for documents and storage media that could help complete the evidence.
At the end of the operations, three public officials are to be taken to the Brașov County Police Inspectorate headquarters for questioning as witnesses. The operation was coordinated by the case prosecutor from the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Făgăraș District Court.
