Botoșani police conducted seven residential searches on Wednesday in the locality of Cristinești and in the municipality of Botoșani, as part of a case in which a 38-year-old man is being investigated for fraud and the unauthorized practice of a profession or activity.
Investigators say that, from 2018 to the present, he allegedly repeatedly conducted religious activities specific to the Orthodox faith without having the right to officiate. The man, known as “Father Ephrem,” allegedly set up a space at his home resembling a place of worship and used vestments and objects specific to priests.
According to the investigation, he had allegedly been defrocked and no longer had the right to officiate. Police are examining whether these elements were used to create the appearance of legality and mislead those taking part, with the aim of obtaining financial benefits.
Following the searches, evidence was seized, and the man was taken to police headquarters under a summons warrant. Investigations are continuing to establish the full extent of the activity and any potential damage.
