The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) validated on Thursday the amnesty law adopted in 2024 by the socialist government of Pedro Sánchez, which targets Catalan separatists involved in the 2017 secession attempt. The CJEU stated that EU law does not oppose this law, which aims to reduce political tensions and facilitate reconciliation.

The law was adopted in exchange for the support of the separatist party Junts, led by Carles Puigdemont, who is in exile in Belgium. The CJEU emphasized that the amnesty does not affect the financial interests of the European Union, contrary to the claims of the Spanish Supreme Court, which refused to apply the amnesty for Puigdemont due to allegations of embezzlement. Approximately 400 people have benefited from the amnesty, but Puigdemont remains subject to an arrest warrant in Spain, awaiting a decision from the Constitutional Court.
