The project to reintroduce the griffon vulture in the Carpathians is a premiere in Romania, bringing together conservation organizations, local authorities, the private sector, and international experts. The griffon vulture disappeared from the Romanian fauna in the mid-20th century due to hunting and poisoning. The first specimens, brought from Spain with the help of the Vulture Conservation Foundation, will be acclimatized for six months in an aviary in Argeș County.
The reintroduction will be carried out in stages, according to European standards. The project is supported by the Milvus Group Association and includes a local consortium made up of the municipalities of Lerești, Rucăr, and Valea Mare Pravăț. In addition, a visitor center, "The Vulture's House," will be built to promote the region's biodiversity. The reintroduction of the griffon vulture is part of a broader vision for restoring ecosystems in the Făgăraș Mountains, with the goal of also bringing back other extinct species.
