The elk, which disappeared from Romania for two centuries, has adapted well in the Vânători-Neamț Natural Park, after four specimens were brought from abroad.

After a two-century absence from the fauna of Romania, the elk has begun to adapt to the environment in the country, according to Romsilva.

Three months after four specimens, one male and three females, were brought from Germany, France, and Switzerland, they have acclimated well in the Vânători-Neamț Natural Park. The animals were initially kept in quarantine and are now captured in images published by Romsilva.

This action is part of a larger project for the repopulation of Romanian fauna, which also includes the reintroduction of bison.

Elks have disappeared from Romania due to hunting and habitat loss, and their presence is an indicator of environmental health, requiring large and unpolluted habitats. They contribute to maintaining biodiversity by consuming vegetation and creating microhabitats for other species.
