Nicușor Dan announced that he intends to designate a new prime minister before leaving for the US

President Nicușor Dan announced on Monday that he intends to nominate a candidate for the position of prime minister before traveling to the United States, scheduled for later this month for the UN General Assembly. The statement was made in an interview with Euronews during his official visit to Finland.

The head of state said he had expected greater openness to dialogue among the political parties at the beginning of the parliamentary session. Since forming a majority appears difficult, Nicușor Dan said that “we can’t wait any longer” and that a nomination would follow.

Asked whether he wanted this to take place before his departure for New York, the president answered in the affirmative. Nicușor Dan will lead Romania’s delegation to the high-level segment of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, and the national address is scheduled for September 23.

The president did not confirm whether Alexandru Nazare, the liberal finance minister, is his preferred choice for prime minister. He described him as a “professional” and a minister with whom he had “worked well,” but stressed that the nomination must lead to securing the 233 votes needed in Parliament.

Nicușor Dan reiterated that he does not want snap elections, warning that they would prolong political uncertainty and could harm the economy. Nevertheless, he said that, in the current context, this scenario can no longer be ruled out.
