Cambodia plans to reintroduce tigers into its forests starting in 2027, with specimens from India.

Cambodia is preparing to reintroduce tigers into the wild, after nearly two decades of absence, with the first specimens planned to be brought from India in 2027. The last confirmed sighting of a tiger in Cambodia was in 2007.

The project, estimated at 43 million dollars, will involve transferring tigers to the Cardamom mountain range, a vast tropical forest. Although authorities promise that the tigers will initially be kept in an enclosure for acclimatization, locals express their concerns about their safety, recalling past attacks.

Experts warn that the ecosystem may not be ready for the reintroduction of tigers due to poaching and deforestation. However, some experts believe that reintroduction could help conserve the tropical forest. There is also consideration of repopulating the area with prey species to ensure food for the tigers.

A permanent monitoring system is necessary to prevent conflicts with humans.
