Tyler Andrews, an American climber aged 36 from Concord, Massachusetts, has set a new speed record on Mount Everest, reaching the summit of 8,848 meters in 9 hours and 55 minutes, surpassing the previous record of 10 hours and 56 minutes, held since 2003 by the Nepalese Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa. The record must be officially verified by the mountain authorities in Nepal. Andrews made the ascent solo, benefiting from supplemental oxygen, food, and water provided by guides.
Although he previously attempted to break the speed record without supplemental oxygen, he was forced to turn back. He is also a cancer survivor and raises funds for young athletes in Ecuador and Nepal. This season, over 950 climbers have reached the summit of Everest, but five people have died during preparations, compared to 18 deaths in 2023.
The Nepalese Kami Rita Sherpa, who has climbed Everest for the 32nd time, highlighted the congestion on the mountain and called for authorities to control the number of climbers.
