Petrișor Peiu, leader of the AUR senators, stated on Tuesday, at Parliament, that he had told President Nicușor Dan that there is a parliamentary majority in favor of holding snap elections. The statement was made after Monday’s meeting at Cotroceni Palace, where the AUR delegation was summoned in the context of consultations on forming a majority and appointing a prime minister.
Peiu argued that the discussion was not an actual consultation, because AUR representatives asked the head of state to substantiate his statements about the party. The leader of the senators also rejected the possibility that the party might support a potential Niculescu government, deeming the chances to be “zero”.
The senator disputed the president’s claim that AUR’s participation in government could affect Romania’s financial stability and its relations with external partners. He argued that the party had not participated in government and that its program provides for reducing budgetary spending.
Peiu stated that AUR respects Romania’s Euro-Atlantic orientation and the provisions of the NATO Treaty, the Treaty on European Union, and the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU. At the same time, he criticized the president’s involvement in forming the parliamentary majority and appointing the prime minister, warning of possible authoritarian deviations.
Also on Tuesday, AUR leader George Simion resumed efforts to suspend President Nicușor Dan and announced that he would send PSD lawmakers the table needed to collect signatures.
