Petrișor Peiu, leader of the AUR senators, responded on Thursday to President Nicușor Dan, after he ruled out the party joining the government. The statement was made on a television station, amid negotiations to form a new government.
Peiu argues that the president cannot select the parties that will form the parliamentary majority and asks him not to discriminate between citizens who vote for different political formations. “The Constitution does not allow him to select the parties that will make up the parliamentary majority,” the AUR leader stated.
He also told PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu to decide whether the party accepts the conditions imposed by Nicușor Dan or retains its decision-making autonomy.
The president said on Wednesday that AUR's presence in the future government represents a “red line,” citing the preservation of the pro-Western direction, national security, and relations with the European Union and external partners.
Nicușor Dan announced that he would hold new consultations at Cotroceni Palace on Monday and that he would make a new nomination for the position of prime minister the same day, after the rejection of the Mureșan Government.
AUR spokesperson Ștefăniță Avrămescu said that the party has two options: participation in government or early elections. He deemed a possible prime ministerial proposal pointless as long as the president had excluded AUR from the future executive.
