AUR Senate leader Petrișor Peiu accused President Nicușor Dan of violating the Constitution by intending to make the appointment of the prime minister conditional on excluding AUR from government. He made the statement on Saturday, ahead of new consultations with the parliamentary parties scheduled for Monday at Cotroceni Palace.
Peiu argues that the president cannot unilaterally decide which party participates in forming the parliamentary majority and must leave this responsibility to the parties represented in Parliament. The AUR leader described the head of state’s position as an abuse of power and warned of an alleged risk to democracy.
The senator says that AUR is not proposing Romania’s withdrawal from the European Union and NATO, nor an increase in the budget deficit, arguing that the party seeks to reduce waste in state spending. In this context, Peiu accused Nicușor Dan of using “lies” to justify his position.
The president announced on Wednesday that he would ask the parties not to include AUR in government, arguing that the party’s participation would affect Romania’s relations with its external partners, including in the areas of security and the European Union. Nicușor Dan scheduled the consultations for Monday and is expected to appoint a prime minister that same evening.
