Independent Romanian MEP Nicu Ștefănuță was elected on Tuesday co-president of the Greens/European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA) Group in the European Parliament, with 27 votes. He will lead the group together with German MEP Terry Reintke, under a co-presidency system with balanced gender representation.
His election marks a first for Ștefănuță and an important moment for Romania’s representation in European political structures. He is the second Romanian to lead a political group in the European Parliament, after Dacian Cioloș, who led the Renew Europe group.
In his new role, Ștefănuță will contribute to setting the political direction of the Greens/EFA Group, with a focus on defending democracy, combating extremism, young people’s rights and European policies adapted to citizens’ real-life concerns.
The MEP said he wants modern politics and a green movement that is closer to people. He warned about the rise of the far right and argued that the Greens must offer Europe a clear vision and plan.
Nicu Ștefănuță is serving his second term as an MEP and has been a Vice-President of the European Parliament since July 2024. The Greens/EFA Group brings together Green, regionalist and independent MEPs from several member states.
