PNL MEP Siegfried Mureșan was re-elected vice-president of the European People’s Party (EPP) Group in the European Parliament on Tuesday evening. He received 152 votes, the second-highest result among the ten vice-presidents elected.
Mureșan said this was the fourth consecutive time he had received the support of his colleagues and thanked PNL and UDMR MEPs for their backing. He stressed that the result was important both for his political career and for Romania’s representation in the largest and most influential political group in the European legislature.
The MEP has served as vice-president of the EPP Group for seven years. According to him, during this period he helped secure more substantial support for Romania, including additional pre-financing funds from the NRRP and funding for priorities such as transport infrastructure.
Mureșan said that during the new term he would continue to promote Romania’s interests, while also taking into account the priorities of the other member states in order to build the majorities needed at European level.
In September, he was designated prime minister by President Nicușor Dan, but the proposed government did not receive Parliament’s vote of confidence. The cabinet received 182 votes in favour and 15 against, below the threshold of 233 votes required for investiture.
