President Nicușor Dan signed on Saturday, September 19, the decree appointing Siegfried Mureșan to the position of prime minister. The document is due to be published on Monday, September 21, in the Official Gazette.

The head of state said that he wants Mureșan to succeed in forming a parliamentary majority, although he acknowledged that the task is difficult. The proposed candidate accepted the nomination after asking for time to consider it.

According to the Constitution, Siegfried Mureșan has 10 days from his designation to request Parliament’s vote of confidence on the government program and list of ministers. A total of 233 votes are required for investiture, in a joint sitting of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.

If at least two investiture requests are rejected, and if a government is not formed within 60 days, the president may dissolve Parliament and call early elections, after consulting parliamentary leaders. So far, Parliament has rejected the Veștea Cabinet, on June 22, while Eugen Tomac’s nomination did not reach a vote. The PSD announced that it would analyze the president’s proposal.
