Siegfried Mureșan and the leaders of the parties supporting him, statements / Ilie Bolojan: “Yesterday, approximately 30 minutes beforehand, we learned of the president’s intention to nominate Siegfried Mureșan for this position”

Siegfried Mureșan was designated on Thursday, September 17, by President Nicușor Dan to form the Government of Romania, nearly three months after the PNL, USR, and UDMR proposed him for this position. The MEP accepted the mandate and announced that he would immediately begin drafting the governing program.

On Friday, Mureșan made statements in Parliament alongside the leaders of the parties supporting him: acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, USR President Dominic Fritz, acting Deputy Prime Minister Tanczos Barna, and Senate President Mircea Abrudean.

Siegfried Mureșan: “I thank the president for this designation, which I accept. I thank my colleagues in the PNL and our partners in the USR and UDMR. We have decided that, together with experts from the PNL, USR, and UDMR, we will immediately begin work on a governing program. The most important thing is what we will do for the country. I will work with my colleagues on drafting the program. The objective is to present the program’s priorities at the beginning of next week and, on this basis, to hold discussions with members of Parliament.”

Ilie Bolojan: “I found out yesterday, approximately 30 minutes beforehand, through the information communicated by Siegfried Mureșan, about the president’s intention to nominate him for this position. Even though the nomination came three months late, the responsibility is just as valid. The PNL will address this situation responsibly.”

Dominic Fritz: “The USR supports the nomination because it believes that Siegfried Mureșan is the right person. There is a great deal of tension in society, created partly by this political deadlock, but also because of the difficult economic situation faced by many Romanians, and because there is hate speech that undermines the foundations of our democracy and frightens many citizens.”

Tancszos Barna: “As we stated when we made the proposal, and as we welcomed his acceptance of the proposal three months ago, today we welcome this designation. The best solution is to rebuild the majority that broke apart in April, even in a different configuration. The rotating premiership can be a solid political solution.”
