Nicușor Dan has designated Siegfried Mureșan as prime minister. Remus Ștefureac: “An intelligent move” that changes the game of negotiations

President Nicușor Dan appointed PNL MEP Siegfried Mureșan prime minister on Thursday, September 17, following consultations with the parliamentary parties and political formations at Cotroceni Palace. Mureșan accepted the proposal and took on the mandate, amid a context marked by several months of political crisis and the failure of two previous nominations.

Political scientist Remus Ioan Ștefureac, director general of INSCOP Research, considers the appointment a surprise and an “intelligent move,” which he says could change the negotiations on forming the future Government. In a public message, he argued that the nomination puts the parties “in a difficult position,” while also reopening the political game.

Ștefureac said the proposal could be accepted if accompanied by a clear message regarding the activation of Article 89 of the Constitution if it is rejected by Parliament. This article allows the president to dissolve the legislature after the rejection of at least two requests for a vote of confidence within 60 days of the first request.

The president announced that no parliamentary majority had taken shape even after the consultations at Cotroceni, but Siegfried Mureșan appeared to have received the most support. Negotiations on forming the Cabinet and the investiture vote in Parliament will follow.
