President Nicușor Dan said on Thursday that following the consultations at Cotroceni Palace, no majority had been formed to nominate a prime minister, which is why he nominated MEP Siegfried Mureșan, because he has “the expertise for this position” and “has received the most votes cast by the parties”.
“We are more than 4 months after the government was dismissed by a no-confidence motion; we have had hundreds of hours of discussions, both together and separately with the parties, to find a solution to the crisis. I saw a great deal of electoral concern among the parties and much less concern for the national interest. Romania needs a government. We do not have a clear majority, despite these hours of discussions; I chose to propose for the position of prime minister the person who received the most votes cast by the parties, namely Siegfried Mureșan. He is someone with experience in the European Parliament who has negotiated important matters. He has the expertise for this position,” Nicușor Dan said on Thursday.
However, President Nicușor Dan said that Mureșan had asked him for some time to think, which he respects. “He remains the first option, and I am waiting for him to confirm or reject before publishing the decree in the Official Gazette. Given the parliamentary configuration, the prime minister’s task will be difficult,” Dan emphasized.
