The Vatican has announced the construction of an agrivoltaic plant, a project estimated at 100 million euros, which will produce renewable energy for the Holy See.
The plant, with a capacity of 80-90 megawatts, will be located at the Santa Maria di Galeria complex, on the outskirts of Rome, and will combine solar energy with agriculture, allowing crops to grow under the solar panels. A mixed Italian-Vatican commission recently launched the project, and its completion is estimated to take 18-24 months. The generated energy will power the transmission station of Vatican Radio and will contribute to the energy self-sufficiency of the Vatican. Although it will not benefit from Italian financial incentives, the surplus energy will be available for Italy.
The project reflects the Vatican's commitment to sustainability, supported by Pope Francis.
