The Tour du Mont-Blanc circuit, a 170-kilometer trail that crosses France, Italy, and Switzerland, could implement a reservation system to manage overcrowding.
The mayor of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, Jean-Marc Peillex, stated that hiking groups are forced to walk too close to each other, leading to behavioral issues and litter. If the proposals are approved, tourists will need to reserve a spot in huts or authorized bivouac areas before starting their hike. The classic circuit takes between seven and 11 days, and Peillex emphasized that currently, hikers move in an Indian file, which is not ideal.
The mayor of Orsières, Switzerland, Joachim Rausis, has also called for better regulation of the trail and coordination among the three countries involved. Saint-Gervais-les-Bains is a major access point for hikers, located about an hour from Geneva.
