Slovakia, under the leadership of Prime Minister Robert Fico, has decided to withdraw from any European Union program aimed at funding military aid for Ukraine, in the context of the Russian invasion. Fico stated that he will not allow Slovakia to participate in financial schemes intended to support Ukraine in the war. Since taking power in 2023, his government has halted state military aid but has continued to allow commercial arms sales. Additionally, Fico has criticized EU sanctions against Russia, claiming that they affect Europe more than Russia. At the same time, EU leaders are seeking financial solutions to support Ukraine, but have postponed the approval of a plan to use frozen Russian assets to finance a loan of 140 billion euros.
