Kremlin confirms drone attack on Ukrainian train near the Polish border

The Kremlin confirmed on Monday, September 14, that the Russian army attacked, on Sunday, with drones, a passenger train in western Ukraine, approximately two kilometers from the border with Poland. Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov claimed that the operation took place on Ukrainian territory and that the Russian army would continue its missions in that country.

According to railway company Ukrzaliznytsia, the drone hit the locomotive of the train traveling on the Kyiv-Warsaw route. The convoy was carrying more than 200 people, but no one was injured after the crew was warned in time. Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that the attack targeted railway infrastructure used to transport European weapons to Ukraine.

The attack took place amid Russian strikes near the Polish border, including one on a gas station near the Dorohusk-Yahodyn crossing. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced measures to strengthen security and warned that the escalation could affect Polish territory.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the attack as a message directed at the West and urged Ukraine’s partners not to be intimidated. Kyiv suspects that Moscow sought to target a train carrying European officials, after another convoy on the same line had transported Boris Johnson and several European officials.
